This winter I’m applying to a number of PhD creative writing programs in fiction. Some have a solid reputation, while others I’ve never heard anything about (apart from what I’ve read on their websites). If anyone could give me some insider information on these programs—the quality of the program, acceptance rates, application tips, etc.—garnered from personal experience or from others, I would be appreciative. Below is the list of these programs.
University of Georgia
University of Denver
University of Utah
Florida State University
Georgia State University
University of North Texas (I don’t know anything about this program)
University of Texas, Dallas
Texas Tech
USC
University of Tennessee, Knoxville
University of Houston

hi, as for florida state university - went to bread loaf writers' conference last year and met a tuition scholar/"waiter" who was getting phd. they mentioned they were happy with program's quality. also, i know a fiction prof there who is very personable, devoted to teaching, and a talented writer. committed faculty there, sounds like. fsu and university of houston i think are the best in quality and toughest to get into on your list, from what i've heard. hope this helps.
Hey,
I'm considering applying to PhD programs in creative writing. I have an MFA and a few stories published. I've been tecahing as an adjunct for three years and I need to move on somehow.
I'm just wondering how your applications are going and if you ever did find any info.
